Chengdu is advantageous in total quantity of talented people compared with other major Chinese cities. Total number of the professionals is 15.5 million, which ranks the fourth in the country and the first in the West, including 4% of master degree holder and above, 30% of bachelors and 40% of technical school graduates.

Chengdu now has 42 universities, including University of Electronic Science and Technology, Sichuan University, Southwestern Jiaotong University and Southwestern Finance and Economics University. There are 590,000 students on campus. The number of the graduates is over 100,000 each year, among which 50,000 are in the science and technology fields and over 10,000 are master holders. There are 44 technical schools with 60,000 students on campus.

There are 70 institutes, 31 technique centers of enterprises, 37 national specialized laboratories, centres, bases, and 9 national engineering (technology) research centers, as well as many training organizations and professional assocations.
